This is a better photo of the Treasuries. City Centre Comics in Glasgow have put aside another Spider-Man edition with a Romita cover where Spidey is fighting the Sinister Six, so the Defenders will be going...
Why are these ones in pride of place ? I see a mix of UK/US are they rare/valuable or of sentimental value ? And what did the Defenders do ;P
Love the Spidey cover with X-Men/Iron Fist/Werewolf and Ghost Rider. Reading Marvel as a kid was a magical thing. I wish I still felt the same excitement now.
I owned some of these as a kid. A couple are replacements of ones I owned as a kid and reluctantly exchanged for (UK reprint) comics so I had complete stories. Others are up because I wanted to own them as a kid and eventually bought them as an adult.
The Defenders is going because it's not a comic I collected seriously and, despite being Gil Kane, the cover's not as lovely as John Romita's work.
The Spider-Man Treasury you mentioned is a take-off of the Wings album cover for "Band On the Run", which came out a few years earlier. If you google it, you'll see the similarity. Oh, the back cover had a mirror shot of the villains all against a similar spotlit wall.
Maybe I'm just a nosy bugger but I love to hear backgrounds on things and know what makes people tick.
I barely remember covers of anything back as far as 76 but I know I got UK weeklies in Junior School as I can remember reading them on wet playtimes. Happy memories :)
I seem to remember glossy colour fronts on some but most were the cheaper paper used throughout.
Visiting your blog always makes me want to get them all down but a load of stuff needs to be moved on the ground and then they are behind even more in the roof space. And I am lazy :P One day soon !!
The Wings cover is really neat. Wouldn't have known if you hadnt mentioned it.
I dont even know for sure whats there in terms of Marvel as I have barely seen them since leaving home in my mid 20's.
My Mum had moved them all over to my Grandad's house but she was worried he was on the way out last year so wanted me to come get them from Durham. As a lad I kept the whole lot on shelves in a cupboard and couldnt believe how many there were seeing them in storage boxes. Most would have been 2000ad's. There was also a pile of Annuals from the mid 70's onwards including Battle, Action, 2000ad. Sure there was a couple of Marvel annuals too.
I opened the lid on each storage box and rummaged briefly before re-storing them.
I did see some of my much loved monthlies from the early 80's. Mighty world of Marvel, Marvel Superheroes and Daredevils.
Pretty much my favourite story arc ever was Captain Britain V Jim Jaspers/the Fury.
Moore/Davies magic !! Would kill for a Fury Special in CMFC.
Also saw a pile of US monthlies but didnt look closely.

Sounds like a real treasure trove, Toon. (Accidental alliteration, honestly.)
