Johnny Alpha, Strontium Dog

  1. Another great mod. I saw a nice pic earlier today of a conversion of Johnny to Middenface Mcnulty.

Brought back more happy childhood memories :) That set me off looking at the metal miniatures where I saw Torso and Evans the fist ! How random was he looking back ?

I really fancy getting the comics out again and am thankful my Mum stored them for 15 years rather than chucking them out.

I visited the official 2000ad site and ordered Johhny, Anderson and Slaine direct. Dredd was sold out but having seen pics online the headsculpt on the Reaction Dredd looks much better than the Legendary Heroes version. Still curious I found a nice custom that combines the 2 and adds Marvel Legends Cap pieces.

It would look better still in a fixed pose and filled/painted.

I love seeing what can be done with toys.

  2. Nice to chat to another 2000AD fan. I buy the collected editions now and I'm looking forward to Blackhawk in November. Really enjoyable strip and even after all these decades I remember it fondly.

As for Johnny, I wasn't as happy with his conversion as I was with Dredd's, even though I think Alpha's costume is cooler.

I like the Dredd figure I converted a lot. The one from the link you posted was excellent, too, but a little over-muscular and lantern-jawed for me. Dredd was not a superhero and the body on that figure made him look like one. The figure I converted was athletic but realistic. It was a great figure to adapt. Some figures are really tricky to pose effectively.

  3. It is nice to chat 2000ad ! I was 9 when it started so it was a huge part of my childhood/teens. Previously I read Battle weekly and of course Action ! Hook Jaw/Dredger etc

I cant decide which style of artwork is my favourite when it comes to Dredd. I love the original Mike Mcmahon look where he is like a biker in top to toe leather but then Bisleys style is also very good. Neither make him look like a Superhero but one is beefier than the other. tbh I would love art/figures of both styles.

I spent pretty much all day yesterday getting re-acquainted with all things 2000ad and really enjoyed it. Considering buying some art for the first time in my life at 43.

Also looking at a big pile of 2nd hand books on Ebay. Case files are just reprints of Dredds prog appearances yeah ? Sure there is a bulk lot of 14 up atm as well as 10 Dredd graphic novels.

If they dont go crazy money I might take a punt.

I really liked Blackhawk and remember him being on a cover once in Roman style outfit which I traced and coloured. Pretty badly mind you ;)

  4. I know exactly where you are coming from. Also 43, also grew up with 2000AD and look back fondly on it.

The case files are indeed reprints. I bought the Strontium Dog case files, as well as Meltdown Man, Stainless Steel Rat, Harlem Heroes, Ro-Busters, A.B.C. Warriors, Rogue Trooper and Sam Slade, Robo-Hunter. They publish one or two a year. The only reason I didn't buy the Dredd books is that they reprinted the old stories twenty years ago in magazine form. I have a set of them.

  6. Toon, posted up some pics of Dredd. I like the pose I settled on a lot, and he turned out better than Johnny.
