Modeller's Knife

Just so you can see the knife I used for applying clay and filler, Toon. I included Yellowjacket - who's had an orange ink wash to define him more - to give you some idea of size.

  1. Huge improvement over original paint job. Hope to have the balls to try it out myself eventually.

So you use the knife to shape the clay ? or apply it ? Only used 'green stuff' so maybe I should try clay next time. What do you buy and where from ?

  2. Yeh, modesty aside, I thought the wash improved the figure enormously.

The clay was just the standard modelling clay sold in model shops. It comes in rectangular blocks and cost something like £4, I think. Been a while, so not sure. It was generally grey in colour, and whitened on drying. I never used a whole block; one lasted me for yonks. I'd generally end up with a portion at the end that had gone hard and had to be binned.

I cut off small lumps and applied them, continuing until the area needing filled was, well, filled. I roughly smoothed it with the knife, too. I should mention that the knife was blunt. It wasn't a cutting knife.

  3. Will have a look see where my nearest modelling shop is and try Clay on the next job. Green Stuff seemed to work well but my thumb is still a mess from last week. Blister took about 6 layers of skin off right at the nail and its still a wee bit sore.

Did you repaint/retouch Guardian in CMFC ?

  4. Guardian? No, don't think so. I'll check. Why do you ask?

Still perplexed at your thumb blister... :)
