...and trays, for Toon

  1. Thats a serious amount of kit you have put together. It shows in your work :)

  2. Thank you. I have to admit that most of this stuff has never been used or used just once! I inherited nearly all the paints from my little brother, too. You will find yourself buying a tin of paint to colour in a tiny area and you will be annoyed that you had to shell out for something so small! So I used his.

Things like cocktail sticks are good for applying neat spots of paint (like the buttons on Bucky's tunic). I also have bottles of stuff like clear varnish, which I used on Iron Man and Silver Surfer to make them look really shiney. Other items like a magnifying glass can be useful, as can small plastic-headed clamps to hold a figure as you paint it.

There's also different grades of sandpaper and small files. The files are utterly indispensable. They are the only items I used as much as the knife. I have four main ones I used: a flat, fairly rough one for making filler fairly smooth; another flat file file, slightly gentler than the first for finishing; a curved head file; and lastly a circular-headed one that ends in a tapered point. The last one I used least, but it's handy for grooves in costumes and awkward spots, like under arms. If I told you to buy ONE thing to help you, I'd say go get a set of files just like I have.

  3. As luck would have it my Wife picked up a cheap set on Saturday with round/curved/square etc and I have tried them out on Wolverine. Results were not as good as I expected but maybe its due to the green stuff I used. It sands really easily but seemed to block up the files after a few seconds.

I have a Silver Surfer set aside for a future project so will bug you for help on him when I get Wolverine done. I think I am stalling on him now knowing he isnt going to look very good. Daft really as its a first go but I see your stuff and as much as its inspiring its also slightly disheartening knowing mine is going to look more like Morph than Wolverine :P

  4. Never did a Surfer conversion. Should be straight-forward, though, as no costume folds, etc. to deal with. Also, a simple coat of silver paint - with perhaps a gloss varnish coating on top - and you're done! Five, maybe ten minutes tops! ;)

The files shouldn't be gumming up. Sounds as if this green stuff you use is not as user-friendly as modeller's clay.

Please don't get disheartened. You'll see big improvements over the first half dozen figures. The first two or three will largely be experimental. I threw mine out they were so bad, and you may be tempted to do the same, but if you keep them you can look back and see just how much you've developed your skills with this.
